We told you about it earlier that Apple’s SMS system in iOS has a major flaw that could lead to SMS spoofing. Fortunately, after the news went viral over the web, Apple has finally responded to the situation. According to them, people should not use the SMS facility if they have any doubts regarding the recipient. Despite of that, you could always use iMessage as much as you want since it overcomes the SMS flaw and check every time a message is sent.
Apple responded to Engadget about the SMS flaw. And here’s the official statement –
Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks. One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they’re directed to an unknown website or address over SMS.
If you were unaware of the SMS flaw, let us remind you again that there are two no’s inside a text message that includes an original no. and a reply-to number. Due to the fact that iOS application doesn’t show reply-to no., you could accidentally reply to someone you were actually not intended to and this could be one of the reason for phishing attacks.
